This high school Physics course provides students with a foundational understanding of classical and introductory modern physics through observation-based scientific inquiry, mathematical modeling, and laboratory investigation. Students study core physical principles including kinematics (speed, velocity, acceleration), forces and motion, dynamic movement, energy transformations, heat and thermodynamics (including engines), waves and sound (acoustics), electricity and circuits, and an introduction to atomic physics.

Instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding alongside applied problem-solving skills. Students learn to conduct experiments, collect and analyze quantitative data, interpret graphs, and apply physics formulas to real-world phenomena. Hands-on laboratory work includes investigations into motion, friction, energy conservation, heat transfer, sound vibration, electrical potential, current flow, and circuit behavior.

Students maintain a physics notebook/lab book including diagrams, calculations, data tables, and written conclusions. Assessment includes lab reports, quizzes/tests, problem sets, projects, and cumulative evaluations demonstrating mastery of physics concepts, vocabulary, and scientific reasoning.

Course Objectives

  • Explain and apply motion concepts including distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, and relative motion.
  • Use graphs and equations to model motion, including interpreting and creating position-time and velocity-time graphs.
  • Analyze forces and dynamic movement using Newton’s Laws of Motion, including net force, inertia, friction, and momentum.
  • Solve physics problems using quantitative reasoning, including unit conversions, significant figures, and algebraic manipulation of formulas.
  • Describe and calculate energy relationships, including kinetic and potential energy, work, power, and energy conservation.
  • Investigate heat and thermodynamics, including heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), temperature change, and efficiency concepts related to engines.
  • Explain wave behavior and acoustics, including frequency, wavelength, amplitude, resonance, harmonics, and the relationship between vibration and sound perception.
  • Understand and apply basic electricity concepts, including electric charge, voltage, current, resistance, and energy in electrical systems.
  • Design and conduct physics experiments by identifying variables, collecting and analyzing data, estimating error, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
  • Communicate scientific understanding through accurate diagrams, written lab reports, and clear presentation of data and calculations.
  • Describe introductory atomic physics concepts, including atomic structure, energy levels, radiation, and basic historical models that shaped modern physics.
